Paraclete football moves up for playoffs

Four Antelope Valley football teams moved into higher divisions in the CIF Southern Section, according to playoff pairings released Wednesday.

Paraclete, which won the CIF State Division 3AA championship last season, moved up from the Southern Section Division 6 to Division 5. Antelope Valley, in Division 9 last year, went up into Division 8.

Spirits head coach Dean Harrington, who is going into his second year at the helm, said he somewhat expected to move up only one division. He added that many of the teams Paraclete faced in last year’s playoffs also moved into Division 5.

“It’s gonna be a little bit tougher this year, that’s for sure,” Harrington said.

Quartz Hill moved up to Division 10 after advancing to the CIF-SS Division 11 championship last year. The Rebels lost in the title game to Valley View.

Boron ascended into Division 12 after playing in Division 11 last season.

Highland stayed in Division 11, while Littlerock, Lancaster and Knight remained in Division 13.

Palmdale, Eastside and Vasquez all moved down a division. Palmdale played in Division 6 last year, while Eastside played in Division 9 and Vasquez in Division 12.

Desert Christian requested to play 8-man football this season, along with four other teams in the CIF-SS.

Girls Volleyball

Quartz Hill will remain in the CIF Southern Section Division 5. Last season, the Rebels reached second round of the CIF State Division 3 playoffs, but lost.

Quartz Hill also fell in the CIF-SS Division 5 semifinals to Culver City.

Highland and Paralcete will compete together in Division 6, while Knight and Lancaster will be in Division 7. Antelope Valley, Littlerock and Palmdale will play in Division 8.

Desert Christian and Vasquez will play in Division 9. Guidance Charter, Lancaster Baptist and Mojave will play in Division 10.

Girls Tennis

Quartz Hill, which went undefeated in the Golden League last season en route to a championship, will stay in Division 4 this season. The other seven GL teams – Highland, Lancaster, Palmdale, Knight, Eastside, Littlerock and Antelope Valley – will play in Division 5.

CIF NOTES: The CIF-SS cross country prelims and finals will again be held at the Riverside City Cross Country Course. The finals were held at the Riverside course for the first time last season since 1972 because the Mt. SAC course is undergoing renovations.
